Thanks for your offer Bruce.    I agree a picture would be helpful.

Because of your help and others I spoke with at Field Day.    I just might try and install myself.   But we shall see.   The equipment has not come in as of yet.  So we are in a holding pattern.    But are trying to gather as many tips and ideas as possible.

    thanks again.

    Allan,

I run FTM400 in my 2017 F150 with a Comet left front fender mount antenna.  I run the Coax through fire wall grommet to the radio body and the power line through another  grommet on the right-side of the fire wall. Youtube will help greatly. Once u get the radio let me know I can help further  If you want I can send pictures of my setup. A picture is worth a 1000 words.

    Cheers,

    Bruce

I found my way into my Tacoma by running the protected 4 awg/antenna cable along the c-channel of the frame and then through the back wall of the truck.

My truck has four holes in the back wall with grommets. The only hole in the firewall is just above the gas peddle, not a good place and I feared driving a hole there.

I understand some radio manufacturers are having trouble with getting chips with the world wide shortage. Suggest come back when radio comes in and if you do not line someone up to install it. One of the hardest aspect of installing is to find a way through the firewall for the wiring and antenna coax. Use heavy guage wire for the run from battery to radio such as 8 or 10 guage.

But come back when have the radio and someone may have better ideas.

The radio we are looking at is a Yaesu FTM 400 XDR.  With a Larsen hood mount antenna.

My truck is a 2008 Chevy Silverado.

I may have found a possible place for installing but waiting to hear back

I have also been told the unit will not be in for a while so one again in a holding pattern.

Couple of questions first: 1. What is the radio model? 2. What type of antenna? 3. What type of truck?

So now that we have a license, now its time to get a mobile radio and have it installed.

Problem is no matter who I have spoken to, even a company recommended by GPS Central.   NO one will install a ham radio into my truck.  I have no idea how to install it correctly.  This is why I am looking for someone who can install it the right way.

So my question is where can I get it installed ?  Who can I talk to ?

Thanks for your help and guidance.
